They try to include too much – you should present with a single goal. Figure out what that is and put that upfront–begin with the end in mind.

They are often “too much” (or keep it simple) – too often, folks get caught up in the whiz-bang features that slide presentation software can provide. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. It detracts from you the present and your message. They are the to see and listen to you not to be entertained by your slides.

75-90% of the content within a slide should be images – people can only either listen or read at one time, and the default is to read. If you have a lot of words on your slide and you’re talking at the same time, no one is listening.

Try to keep text to 3 bullet points per slide and 5-7 words per bullet point – Slides are not scripts. They are prompts for your brain Most words should come out of your mouth, not display on the slide.

Synch up your talk track with what’s on the slide – make sure the words you say include those on the slide, otherwise you’ll confuse the audience, and they will end up missing either the written or spoken content.

If you have a lot of text, step aside and give time to read – your audience can only read or listen. If there is something to read, step aside and let them read.

Know your audience – their background will determine their area of interest and thus their questions. Fiance? Tech? Marketing. Prepare accordingly.

You can have additional slides in your appendix for questions – try to anticipate what questions might be asked and if needed prepare slides to back up your answer in the appendix. If the audience doesn’t ask because their too nice, or intimated, go ahead and ask the question yourself .

Always understand the question before responding – we all get nervous and don't hear what was asked-and then plow ahead with some random answer—so you don’t appear confused. Better to ensure you heard the right question. Nothing wrong with asking for a repeat or rephrase of the question. You can even rephrase it back to make sure you understand. And if you don’t know the answer, say so. Everyone knows BS when they see, hear or smell it.
